The main issue the film tackles is ageism, because all these new high tech digital future toys that the child visitors bring in are giving these old heirlooms a hard time until Woody and Bow come in and help them fight back and ultimately achieve an understanding and unification between the two factions.
They even enlist the help of Buzz Lightyear and all the other returning toys, like Rex and Jesse, et cetera, because Bonnie's grandson, who now owns these toys, attends a preschool integrated into the home. And these days, even Buzz is considered an old, outdated toy, which would be a funny thing for Buzz to grapple with. But something Woody realizes as he gets to know these old heirlooms is that they all have these great stories, which they share in short flashback scenes, because they stayed with their owners like a toy normally would. And literally watched all these incredible moments in their owner's lives play out from their unique vantage points up on the mantle or the high shelves of their owner's home. And even though Woody has had a great life as a lost toy with Bo, he still sometimes thinks about what he may have missed out on by choosing to go his own way all those years ago.
At the end of the film, once the main conflict has been settled, woody has to say goodbye to Bo when she finally succumbs to old age. In their last scene together, woody and Bo share a dance to the song. You make me feel brand new Bow dresses up the common room for the two of them with Christmas lights and a disco ball because she knows it's her time. She's seizing up limby limb as they dance, and Woody doesn't want it to ever end, but she helps him through it, and by the time their dance ends, he'sholding a lifeless doll. Woody places Bow up on the mantle in the visiting room of the home so she can watch over all the families that pass through, just like in all the stories the heirlooms have told him, and he knows he'll be joining her soon enough.
After that, Woody says goodbye to Buzz and his other friends, who are leaving for the day. Buzz tells Woody he should sneak into the bag with them, just like he snuck himself into Bonnie's box all those years ago. He doesn't have to be alone tonight, and he shouldn't be. Woody smiles and says he's too old for that sort of thing, but that getting into that box with his friends was the best choice he ever made.
Even though they're coming back the next day, buzz and the others get the sense that this is the last time they'll get to talk to Woody, and so they each make the most of their goodbye. And so, the final scene. Woody, now alone and on his last legs, also walks through the halls of the retirement home. In the middle of the night, when everyone's asleep, he comes to a room that he's never been in before. The door is ajar, and there's a light on inside. Curious, he goes in and sees that there's a very old man on the bed, and he's not in good shape.
He's hooked up to a machine and breathing shallowly, Woody carefully climbs up onto the bedside table, where there's a bunch of framed photographs, and his heart stops when he sees himself in one of the photos being held by a familiar boy.
He looks at the old man and without even thinking, says out loud, andy. The old man's eyes open, and Woody is too stunned to move. And the old man is looking right at him. The old man says, Woody. Woody doesn't say anything, just stands there, sprung. Andy then asks, am I dead? Woody feels he has no choice but to answer. No. No, you're not dead. Am I dreaming? Woody thinks he should say yes, but instead says, no, you're not dreaming. A smile forms on Andy's face. You know something?
I always kind of knew I'd come back into my room and things wouldn't be where I'd left them, in the box. You put yourself in Bonnie's box, didn't you, Woody? That's just the sort of thing you would do. Andy coughs, and Woody can see he doesn't have one. He says, Andy, it shouldn't be me. Here, let me call someone.
Let me get your family. I'll make an anonymous call. No. No. They've said they're good wives and gone home for the night. They live 20 minutes away, and I don't have that long left. I can feel it. What can I do? Tell me your story. And what follows is a wordless, dissolving montage of a conversation between Andy and Woody, where they fill each other in on everything they've missed from the other's life, from the moment they separated.
And at the end, just before he closes his eyes for the final time. Andy says, thanks for stayingcwith me, Woody. And he passes away.
And Woody just watches him forca moment, and then he climbs into the bed and lies down nextcto Andy, just like he did when Andy was a kid. And in a reversal of that greatcshot in the first Toy Story where we see Woody come to life for the first time, woody takes a moment, smiles, then slowly goes still in his default pose. And the camera pulls back as an instrumental version of You've Got a Friend in Me plays. And the sun is coming up, putting light on everything that was in shadow.
